The story behind the song

God Please

Alex English 2025

Usually, I’m not the type to share the story behind a song. One reason is that I want the listener to relate to it in their own way, and two, because sometimes it’s personal.

However, this song is different. It came into existence in less than 30 minutes and felt soul-cleansing. Its story deserves to be told.

After a bad breakup, I faced real challenges finding myself again and reconnecting with the music that defines who I am. Every day, for about a year, felt like dragging through mud, and writing music became more of a burden than a source of inspiration. It sounds terrible, but when your mind and heart are broken, it feels as though willpower isn’t enough to pick yourself back up.

Then one day, I started going back to church. Not necessarily for any religious reason, but because I needed something. I needed peace, time to think—something larger than myself.

There, I found people doing the same thing as me. Our reasons for being there may have been different, but collectively, we were the same.

Within a month, "God Please" poured out of me and into existence. It is my prayer, my reminder, and my promise to myself that I will never let someone treat me that way again. I will not lose my spark.

"Lord, I am strong, and I know who I am."

Artwork inspiration

The artwork for "God Please" was taken in Salt Lake City, Utah, by my friend and colleague. After a conference, a few of us took a trip where we walked along the salt flats and sped down the main strip next to a man paragliding with his wife.

It was a trip I will never forget—and the pictures that came from it were the perfect imagery. Walking alone to rediscover yourself and finding happiness in the moment.
